Animals: African Savanna (The Animal Society)

Created on:2022-11-29 21:04

This course is aimed at encourging children's scientific thinking and understanding towards mankind.

First, We led a 3-d virtual tour through the Smithsonian National Museum's African animal exhibition, we first introduced the type of habitats.

Then, we started with questions to inspire children to watch and think for the difference with their real life experiences.

Then we taught the children about related scientific knowledge that we consider are easy to be understood and do not require much prior knowledge.

We designed questions to let children apply their knowledge into use and practice their scientific thought by deducting detailed examples from a broad concept.

Next, we extended the topic to mankind, hoping to inspire more observations and thoughts on that. Many of autistic children who are close or of adult age in our community expect people to be generous and kind; however, this is not true in the reality, and they may get hurt as they soon step into the society. We hope to let them undestand the selfish actions by introducing the concept using animals.

We connected the action of animals with the human world. Since many autistic children are likely to perform uncontrolled reactions when encountering fright, such as loud noices, we tell children to stay calm when hearing alarms. We also encourage children to try out internet searching skills that may be useful to them.
